An introduction to the Mens Section
The Mens Section of the Club participates in several competitive events versus other clubs in the Harrogate and District Union, The Dales Alliance, within Yorkshire, and also in friendly events against other clubs in the region.
The Harrogate Union or A Team involves singles played off scratch and four fourballs played off handicap including the Captain and Professional.
There are currently teams in the Harrogate Union stretching from Bedale in the North East to Ilkley in the South West. The Harrogate Union also organises Team Championships, for the first, second and third divisions, individual championships and a Presidents Day along with Alliance Meetingsin the winter and representative team matches versus the other local unions during the summer.
We also play in the Bainbridge Shield against fellow Harrogate Union Clubs. These fixtures typically involve twelve man teams from each club with handicaps 8-15.
The Dales Alliance involves Catterick, Richmond, Blackwell Grange, Crook, Thirsk & Northallerton as well as Bedale. There are twelve events, i.e. six in the Spring and six in the Autumn involving five fourballs from each club in a Stableford Competition.
The club also enters a team for the Yorkshire Team Championship. There are seven divisions each with 18 teams. Clubs have three players each playing
36 holes off scratch. From the seven divisions the top six clubs are promoted and bottom six are relegated, and the middle six retain their place.
We have friendly matches against local clubs including Masham, Barnard Castle and Easingwold. The matches with Richmond are for the Gibson Cup. this is a home and away fourball match play event and holes up/down over all 18 holes contribute to the team result. A similar fixture is held with Castle Eden for the Baceam Decanter.
Full details of all these events are included in the clubs Fixture Diary which includes the information on Medal Competitions, Cups and Trophies as well as the winter and summer singles, four balls and greensomes knockout events.
A triangular match between Bedale, Saltburn and Bishop Auckland Clubs, all formed in 1894, is also held each year.
Hence there is a wide variety of formally organised competitive golf for players at Bedale Golf Club. In addition we have ad hoc groups who organise their own competitions at regular times of the week throughout the playing seasons.
